Insulating felts meet various requirements. When loading pistols and rifles, they are often placed between the powder charge and the paved round bullet. If wiped again before the bullet is placed, the felt protects the powder charge from moisture and the plaster/bullet combination from the hot combustion gases of the black powder. Dry 3mm insulating felts placed between the powder charge and the long bullets often lead to a significant improvement in precision. Thicker felts are used in VL revolvers to fill the cavity between the optimal precision charge and the placed bullet/round bullet. Note: SP only burns optimally in a compacted form and cavities between the powder charge and the bullet lead to poor combustion and, above all, to dangerous gas pressure jumps.
